At Iqra Primary School, we are passionate about creating a more sustainable future and empowering pupils to care for the world around them. Through our Climate Action Plan and the dedication of our Sustainability Lead and Eco Warriors, children are encouraged to take meaningful actions to protect the environment both in school and within the wider community.

As part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing our environmental impact, our school has taken important steps towards renewable energy and sustainable transport. Iqra Primary has been selected to take part in a government-funded pilot scheme to install solar panels. This initiative supports our aim to reduce energy consumption, lower our carbon footprint, and help pupils understand the importance of renewable energy. We are also developing more sustainable transport options by installing EV charging ports for staff and local community members. This helps encourage environmentally friendly travel choices and supports our wider sustainability goals.

From reducing waste and promoting recycling to supporting renewable energy projects and sustainable travel, our pupils are developing the knowledge, skills, and values needed to become responsible global citizens.

We are proud of the positive impact our school community continues to make and believe that, by working together, small actions can lead to big change.

Eco-Schools Award

We are proud that Iqra Primary School has achieved the Eco-Schools Award in recognition of our commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our pupils, staff, and Eco Warriors in promoting positive environmental action across the school community. Through a range of sustainability projects and initiatives, we continue to encourage everyone to play their part in protecting our planet and creating a greener future.

Green Careers

As part of our commitment to preparing pupils for the future, Year 6 pupils have also been introduced to a range of green career opportunities. Through discussions, activities, and exposure to careers linked to sustainability, renewable energy, environmental science, and conservation, pupils have developed a greater understanding of how they can contribute to a more sustainable world in the future. This has helped inspire pupils to think about the important role green careers will play in protecting our planet for generations to come.

 

Meet Our Eco Warriors

Our Eco Warriors are a passionate group of pupils dedicated to promoting sustainability and environmental awareness across the school.

The Eco Warriors meet regularly to discuss ideas, plan projects, monitor progress, and encourage the whole school community to make environmentally friendly choices.

They play an important role in helping our school develop sustainable habits and inspire others to care for the world around them. 

What Have Our Eco Warriors Done?

Over the year, our Eco Warriors have led a range of exciting projects and initiatives to help improve sustainability across our school community.

Uniform Swap Shop: Our Eco Warriors helped organise a school uniform swap shop to support families and reduce waste. Families were invited to donate good-quality uniform items that could be reused by others within the school community. This project promoted recycling, reduced textile waste, and encouraged sustainable thinking beyond the classroom.

Food Waste Monitoring Project: The Eco Warriors conducted a food waste investigation at the school canteen over several weeks. Pupils monitored and recorded the amount of food being wasted, analysed the results, and shared their findings with the rest of the school during assembly. This project helped raise awareness about food waste and encouraged pupils to think more carefully about sustainability and responsible choices.

Sustainability Awareness: Our Eco Warriors regularly promote simple but important ways we can all help the environment, including:

• Switching off lights and devices when not in use
• Recycling correctly across the school
• Reducing litter
• Looking after outdoor spaces
• Encouraging reusable water bottles and lunch containers
• Promoting sustainable habits in everyday school life

Community Involvement

Many of our sustainability projects involve parents, families, and the wider community, helping environmental messages reach beyond the classroom. We are proud of the positive impact our pupils have already made and remain committed to continuing our sustainability journey. Through teamwork, leadership, and small everyday actions, we can continue working towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for everyone.
